Make 2016 The Year You Achieve Your Goals

If you want to make sure 2016 is the year you accomplish all your health and fitness goals, keep these things in mind:

• It’s not about how you start; it’s about how you finish. Make sure the determination you feel now stays with you in the spring, the summer and at the end of the year. Most games are won in the fourth quarter.

• Don’t strive for perfection. It’s unachievable. But you can be better today than you were yesterday, and you can be better tomorrow than you are today. Start with that.

• Attitude is everything. Our successes or failures have less to do with what life hands us and more to do with how we handle what life hands us.

• You are what you eat. If you’re serious about losing weight, having more energy and feeling better, it all starts with food. No one ever got obese or felt unhealthy eating a diet based on lean protein and vegetables.

• You are what you do. Planning is great, but execution is even more important. Follow your plan consistently for the year and the results will change who you are into who you want to be.

• You can’t out-train bad habits. The best workouts in the world won’t cancel out eating junk food, overeating, drinking too much, having too much stress or getting too little sleep.

• Everybody must do squats.

• Everybody needs help. You pay an accountant to do your taxes. You pay a mechanic to fix your car. If you are serious about your goals, hire a trainer to help make them a reality.

• You get what you pay for. There are plenty of bad trainers out there (just like bad accountants and bad mechanics). Interview your trainer and ask for references. But remember, the best ones may cost a little more.

• Everybody must drink water.

• It’s all in your head. Mental focus is the key to physical success. The body will go where the mind leads it. But if you’re not right in the head, you’ll end up spinning your wheels.

• Comparisons aren’t helpful. You can use others for inspiration, but you can never be somebody else, so don’t try. Instead be the best you that you can be.

• Never stop growing. Continue learning. Try new things. Keep the ones that make you better. Drop the ones that don’t.

• Eliminate negativity. Distance yourself from the people, places and things that bring you down.

• Make your bed. It allows you to achieve one accomplishment before you leave the bedroom.

• Enjoy the ride. Self-improvement should be invigorating and liberating. If you aren’t happier with the new person you are creating, you’re doing something wrong. Start over.

• Make adjustments. Your workout plan should not look the same in two months as it does today. Find ways to keep the intensity.

• Be a part of something bigger than you. Share your journey with others, especially those who are on the same path. Be a help to them and let them be a help to you. A kind word and a show of support can have ripple effects far beyond the person on the treadmill next to you. Never underestimate the power of those ripples.
